About

Tamara Stevens is a freelance writer who grew up in Petoskey, Michigan. After graduating from Michigan State University with a Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, she went out into the world to pursue a career in writing. Her adventures included writing for Kiwanis International’s publications in Indianapolis, Indiana, before returning to Emmet County 11 years later. She continued writing for numerous publications including the Traverse City Record Eagle, Petoskey News-Review, Edible Grande Traverse magazine, Kiwanis Magazine, and Emmet County’s website and publications. While writing for the county, she began interviewing and sharing the stories of U.S. veterans. Meeting the men and women who bravely served their country and being able to share their adventures with readers is a privilege that Tamara takes seriously and finds enormously gratifying.

Petoskey man took part in the Battle of Midway in 1942 Anyone who has seen a movie about the Battle of Midway during WWII has a fairly good understanding of what Winfield Josiah Sluyter’s experience was like. “Win,” as he is called, served as an aircraft mechanic in the U.S. Navy during WWII in the Pacific Ocean aboard an aircraft carrier. He was assigned to a Casablanca-class escort carrier named “U.S.S. Savo Island,” a CVE 78. Win Sluyter pictured in his living room, 2019. (Photo by Tamara...
